Snooper's songs run at a blistering pace, with angular riffs sneaking in one ear and out the other, propelled by frenzied percussion. The Nashville five-piece - completed by bassist Happy Haugen, drummer Brad Barteau, and guitarist Conner Sullivan - squeeze in as many ideas as possible in tunes shy of two minutes, this off-the-cuff musicianship making their 22-minute 2023 debut album, Super Snõõper, feel twice as long and substantial. The wild silliness of abandoning a groove for a totally different one halfway into a barely minute-long song, just for the sake of it, is what makes them addictive.
With second record 'Worldwide', Snõõper have polished the edges of their quintessentially fuzzy egg punk, joining forces with alt rock's favourite producer, John Congleton (St Vincent, Alvvays, Xiu Xiu), to keep their erratic energy at the forefront while streamlining their sound for headphone listening. Where their 2023 debut exuded the energy of being front row at one of their gigs - lofi, crackly, and rough - 'Worldwide' adds a layer of clean production to the Nashville natives' raw punk. Never fear, though - 'Guard Dog', 'On Line', and 'Blockhead' all still showcase jumpy layers of snappy vocal delivery, fast drums, and roaring guitar riffs, and 'Subdivision' plays with reverb and rumbling synths for a gothier sound.
